They make a fine product that gives a wonderful shave, of course. But on a business trip I happened to sit next to a Gillette executive and asked him why their blades had become so expensive.
He said their product had cost a billion dollars to develop um, this isn't the space shuttle here , but then added only half joking that also it was to pay for his bonuses!
That conversation is what finally pushed me over the edge to explore using a safety razor as my father had done along with the rest of the male shaving world a generation ago.
There's a much smaller frame of reference, user wise, to ask opinions of and to get advise, other than online blogs.
I followed the advise on one web site, to opt for one of the blade variety packs sold to expose you to different manufacturers and to experience which blades were most comparable to my individual skin, beard and sensitivity.
I'd also read rave reviews of Japanese, Feather brand blades and their infamous surgical sharpness. I found them amazing blades, but for me they were actually too sharp!
Dorco blades are made in Korea, a country distinguishing itself for cutting edge products and manufacturing; forgive the pun. They proved to be the sweet spot between the ideal sharpness, good longevity and durability, and excellent pricing.
The correct formula of which handle, which shave cream etc. But these Dorco blades are the cornerstone for me. I occasionally pop in a Feather blade to reaffirm my commitment to Dorco and inevitably my face looks like I'd been in some unsavory back alley knife fight with a gang of assailants.
It's still good advise for anyone starting with a safety razor to buy one of those variety bundles of blades. For me though, I cannot recommend these blades highly enough.
As close and safe a shave as Gillette at one fiftieth the cost! It is a very inexpensive blade and It is a very inexpensive blade and yet gives a very close shave.
I happen to use an adjustable Qshave razor usually set on 4. I use both proraso and Arco shaving soaps as well as some others, and get a super close, clean shave.
The blade has a combination of being sharp but also forgiving if you press a little too hard. I have a very thick beard, but can still get 4 very good shaves off of each blade.
Meaning for a pack of , I get shaves! When I shave, I use the blade edge where you can see the setting for the first and third shave.
I used the edge opposite that for the second and fourth shave. That way each blade edge get a fairly equal amount of use.
After that I prefer to change the blade. If you really wanted to be frugal you could probably get a couple more shaves out of the same blade though.
I have always used more expensive blades, for example from Israel because they were sharper and were made from platinum.
I had my first shave with these Dorco blades. They seemed thinner and easier to bend, but I needed razors as I left my "expensive" blades at my other home.
The shave was very good. I would not say a total one-pass like the other blades, but it cut my whiskers just fine and I did not get one nick or experience any facial irritation.
I am not sure if these blades will last as long as my others, but I will update and let you know. If they do last as long, I will be ordering these in the future.
BTW, The name on this review is my wife's name,. This was for my husbands birthday and even though today, feb 28th, is his birthday, I gave him this gift 2 days ago since he will be out of town and not here to celebrate with us.
The shave was absolutely fabulous, and will be buying this again for sure!!! This was my first purchase of baldes for my safety razor had a really hard choice not having tried anything else and saw alot of reviews in YouTube about these not being very sharp but coming from a normal razor these are amazing and for beginners like myself I believe they are perfy I shave against the grain and have never had a problem will buy again when I run out which might be a while I've had this pack about 3 months now I believe.
After having my disposable schick razor change the stupid cartridge shape again trying to force me to fork over Im northern european so i have very thick facial hair and it grows fast, Ive never had a closer shave in my life, as i write this i have just gotten off an 8 hour work day and i still look and feel like ive just shaved.
I had my father try the dorcos and he agreed. Love those blades. They are pretty much as sharp as the Feather brand but at a fraction of the cost.
If you tried other blades, like Merkur, you will realize how much you've been overpaying when you try Dorco.
Just make sure you order this specific model because there is another model that comes in paper packaging, which is supposed to be the same but is not made in Korea it's made in a different South-Asian country and it is not as sharp.
When I was a young man and joined the military, back in the stone age; during boot training I developed the habit of shaving without lotion and at times without water in order to save time or to touch up before an inspection.
I'm middle age now I won't admit to elderly yet and my face is still like leather, but that doesn't mean i am impervious to pain or discomfort. I appreciate a smooth and comfortable shave.
These blades were chosen after trying out an assortment of 10 manufacturers and keeping notes on comfort and longevity. Dorco blades combined with my father's old adjustable safety razor leave my face smooth and comfortable without a blood sacrifice to the shaving gods.
